5/22/2010 - Dismal Swamp
Left Elizabeth City around 10:00 am. The water was calm and the winds were low. We stopped off at Pelican Marina for water and a pump out that never happened - bad suction on the Marina's part. Nonetheless - we moved on and started our way to the Dismal Swamp. This Swampland has lots of history. George Washington commissioned the digging of the Dismal Swamp Canal to drain the land and to give a shipping route for barges. Both slaves and men who had bought their freedom, dug out the canal. We stopped at the Dismal Swamp Welcome Center. We rafted up at the welcome center with many sail boats.
Today was our first locke. We were raised 8 feet into the next water level on the canal. Everything went smoothly. Tomorrow we will finish out trip through the Dismal Swamp and into Virginia.
